Letter of the Day | Don’t abandon the debates, democracy needs them
There is growing public concern, and even some outrage on social media, at the reported $25 million price tag to stage this year’s National Political Debates. According to Brian Schmidt, chairman of the Jamaica Debates Commission, this is the approximate cost of hosting the usual three debates planned ahead of the general election. With our many economic challenges, that number understandably raises eyebrows. But debates shouldn’t be dismissed. I believe they are one of the most essential democratic practices we must protect.
International research consistently shows that debates play a critical role in voter education. They foster issue learning — that is, they help voters better understand and perceive to know more about the policies, platforms, mandates and priorities/manifestoes of those seeking power.
This is especially important in political systems like ours, where the campaign season is often dominated by partisan posturing, sound bites, and media spin. Debates offer a rare counterbalance. They force politicians to answer directly, to clarify their positions and manifesto points side by side, and to speak to the public, not just at them.
This year’s planned debate will once again feature a debate on leadership, the economy, and social issues, and this couldn’t be more timely or necessary. In a country grappling with questions of economic growth, social inequality, and governance, what better opportunity is there for Jamaicans to hear from those who would lead us?
Of course, $25 million is no small sum. But democratic legitimacy is not free. It requires investment, in institutions, transparency, and platforms that promote public reasoning. The debates are one of the few nationally broadcast, widely anticipated events where ideas take centrestage.
To do away with them or scale them back would be a step in the wrong direction. It would deny Jamaicans, especially young and first-time voters, the chance to see leadership in action and compare competing visions. In a time when cynicism about politics runs high, we should be finding more ways to encourage issue-based engagement, not fewer.
Private sponsors should support the Jamaica Debates Commission in ensuring that these debates proceed. Their contribution is not merely to a media event, but to a healthier democracy.
Let us not confuse cost with waste. The National Political Debates are worth every dollar, not because they are perfect, but because they give us, the people, a clearer view of those who seek to serve.
